First aid: Learning line

Belgian Red Cross-Flanders developed a learning path on first aid. A learning path indicates how students can achieve the final objectives for a specific learning area. The first aid curriculum aims to provide teachers with a framework to give concrete substance to development objectives and final objectives.

The first aid curriculum aims to be a practical instrument that teachers or schools can use immediately. The learning path provides an overview of learning contents throughout the different educational levels. This ranges from nursery education, through primary education, to secondary education. Within each theme a distinction is made between knowledge, skills and attitudes.

The first aid curriculum covers the following first aid topics:

  • four steps in first aid,
  • resuscitation and defibrillation,
  • choking,
  • skin wound,
  • burn,
  • bleeding,
  • injury to bones, muscles or joints,
  • poisoning,
  • drowning.

In addition to these themes, there is also a general theme. This bundles the objectives that are common to the other themes, such as washing hands, putting on disposable gloves, calling for help, etc.

The objectives to be achieved for the students are shown for each theme. These objectives fall under the domains of knowledge, skills and attitudes.

The first aid learning path sets the objectives per educational level.
